The Orlando Fisher House

The Fisher House Foundation is just one of the many resources that give back to the veteran community. This Foundation builds homes for military and veteran’s families to stay free of charge while their loved one is being treated in a local military or VA hospital. These houses include over 21 bedrooms with private bathrooms and a common kitchen, laundry room, dining room, and living room that guests share. They have served over 13,000 families throughout the country and have saved families over $360 million in transportation and lodging costs.

Orlando is very proud to have its very own Fisher House located at the Orlando VA Medical Center in Lake Nona. This house has 16 suites and opened on February 14th, 2018. Since then, they have provided families with a home away from home where they can be within walking distance of their loved ones. Their overall goal is to completely accommodate the guest so they never have to leave the campus during their stay. To use the Fisher House, a veteran’s loved one must live over 50 miles away and a social worker must submit an electronic request.

The Fisher House offers many ways for people outside of the veteran community to get involved. They offer opportunities for people to fundraise through Amazon and the creation of personal events. They also take local regular and occasional volunteers. Regular volunteers welcome the families, assist in routine administrative tasks, participate in light housekeeping, and serve meals. Occasional volunteers assist in providing house meals for guests, holiday decorating, coordinating themed days or special events, landscape projects, cleanup days, special functions on Veteran’s Day, and support foundation fundraising events. The Fisher House also allows people to get involved by becoming board members, joining the planning committee, and hosting an open house at the Orlando Fisher House.
